Middle school is full of relationship drama. So is science! This session introduced new, free modules that help students understand relationships between humans and germs in terms of relative size, inter-dependency in ecosystems, and the eternal struggle for survival, including consideration of relationships between scientists competing, yet collaborating, to beat diseases. http://www.vaccinemakers.org/lessons/middle

All living things are made up of cells, which is the smallest unit that can be said to be alive. An organism may consist of one single cell (unicellular) or many different numbers and types of cells (multicellular).

Organisms, and populations of organisms, are dependent on their environmental interactions both with other living things and with nonliving factors.

Phenomena that can be observed at one scale may not be observable at another scale.

Graphs, charts, and images can be used to identify patterns in data.

Systems may interact with other systems; they may have sub-systems and be a part of larger complex systems.

Small changes in one part of a system might cause large changes in another part.

Complex and microscopic structures and systems can be visualized, modeled, and used to describe how their function depends on the shapes, composition, and relationships among its parts, therefore complex natural structures/systems can be analyzed to determine how they function.
